I Have a Dream

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

This is what making America better looks like.  It’s not about a a fringe movement of a political party that thinks it is having its rights tramped upon when it does not win a democratic election.  It’s about a pluralistic society with equal rights for all.

Our Founding Fathers Said So, That’s Why They Didn’t Write It Down

Monday, August 9th, 2010

I’m really thinking that if I ever get a time machine I’m going back in time to the “Founding fathers” and having them end the Constitution with, “beyond this, we’re out, now leave us the fuck out of this.”  “The founding fathers intended” has pretty much become the code word for I’m about to spout some right-wing ideology with no rational basis behind it and will therefore justify it through a fallacious appeal to patriotism.  One of the benefits of living in the Midwest though, is getting to see this kind of argument play out day after day by people less educated than Glen Beck—side note, one of the best things about not having cable, not accidentally flipping on Fox News.

Take Mr. Helms’s assertion that in order to have freedom when must be moral.  He doesn’t get into any specifics about this morality, but I assume he probably means Christian morals.  After all, if one reads what Jesus teaches about the poor, one can only infer that Jesus is metaphorically taking poor to mean multinational corporations and giving charity is tax cuts for the rich.  But one thing Mr. Helms is dead set on is that whatever the morality, the founding fathers intended it:

That’s why our Founding Fathers said that for a people to be free, they must be moral. In the end, only a moral people can say “no” to immoral behavior in the privacy of their home or the voting booth.

Though, I’m left with one question, which article of the Constitution is that in?  And, as for saying “no” to immoral behavior in the privacy of one’s home; I’m going to go ahead and take a pass on that one.

5 Stupid, Unfair and Sexist Things Expected of Men: on the male side of gender issues, Greta Christina looks at the ways in which men are forced into a narrow gender definition. Besides, anybody who will point out that ”men get a clear social message that, in order to be manly, they have to be tall,” is certainly somebody I will highly consider somebody worth listening to. Trust me, it sucks being short.

We’re one step closer to bringing Anne Rice back into the fold: she’s announced that organized religion can suck it.  Basically, since being Christian in America is quickly becoming synonymous with being a right-wing blowhard and Anne Rice, pretty much being a liberal, has had enough and has decided that she will follow Christ in however screwed up a manner as she pleases.  Read the comments, they’re nice and full of people shouting “HOW DARE SHE?!” You know, because all the people she hates are either Catholics (as if the Vatican is the only problem with Christianity) or the fringe group that isn’t actually Christian.  Cognitive Dissidence, they can has.

And the shocker of shockers, Republicans vote against small businesses and tax cuts. Why, because those mean ole democrats wouldn’t allow them to add such relevant amendments as the estate tax, nuclear loan guarantees, border security, and those Bush tax cuts for rich folk that are getting the boot.   But don’t fret, a Republican did say something nice and hypocritical:

“This small-business bill should pass, and it should pass with relevant amendments,” Mr. LeMieux said. “Before I am a Republican, I am a Floridian and an American, and this bill is good for our country.”

So if it’s so good, why not vote for it to pass without such aforementioned, highly relevant amendments?

Your set designer, you may want to get a new one.

Yellow star on a red background, seriously?  You do know that you make a living calling everything the democrats do “socialism, communism, and/or Marxism,” right?

Ride Sally Ride, On Your Bigot Shtick

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

This just in, conservative politician makes stupid, factless assertions about homosexuality and it gets printed in a newspaper for sane and educated people to mock.  Bad news, she’s in Oklahoma and likely to get elected.  So the article is actually about a transgendered woman running against our idiot-n-mention, who is being accused of being the patsy of the global homosexual cabal to destroy the entire universe with their deviant ways of loving each other.  We all know that hating each other and getting divorced is what God intended, even better if you screw up the kids for life.

There’s just so much juicy to be mocked:

Mrs. Kern, 63, said that she and her husband, Steven D. Kern, a Baptist minister, have attended events held by Reclaiming Oklahoma for Christ, but that she had “no say in what they write on their materials or Web site.”

Now, having the misfortune of having lived next to the country’s asshole for many years I’m left wondering, exactly when did the atheists take Oklahoma?  I understand we got the East and West coasts in a sort of time share deal with Scientology and Evangelical Christians who like the weather, but I didn’t know we put a bid in on Oklahoma.  In fact, I’m pretty sure if we gave the state back to the natives they’d pawn it off for a Caribbean island.  Furthermore, has anybody actually asked Christ if he wants Oklahoma?  Perhaps he’s a Texas fan, or, being that he’s Jewish, would much rather live in Queens.  I think it’s rather presumptuous of Oklahomans to assume Christ wants anything to do with their state.

During that speech, [Kern] said, “Studies show no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than a few decades.”

Studies have also shown that putting conservative Christians in charge of government has produced shitholes like Oklahoma that are destructive to good governance, education, and society as a whole.  And only one of us has anything resembling evidence and facts, sadly it’s also the one who just pulled the idea that there were studies out of his ass.  I’m even willing to bet that, even for a social studies teacher, Mrs. Kern has no idea that what a society views as a homosexual act is culturally relative.  Giving a blowjob is actually a rite of passage into manhood in one culture.

“In 2006, I didn’t have an opponent. Since my statements were put on YouTube, I have had opponents in 2008 and now in 2010 who are supportive of homosexual issues and have their support.”

Go figure, you say something ridiculous, promote bigotry and hatred based on iron age superstition and people who disagree with you run against you with support of people who disagree with you.   Oh, right, we had to make it clear that they were running on behalf of the Homosexual Illuminati.

In 2009, Mrs. Kern sponsored the signing of a morality proclamation that stated that the country’s economic problems were a result of declining moral values, including same-sex marriage, divorce, abortion and child abuse.

Not being an economist by trade I’m a little bit out of the loop on how same-sex marriage has anything to do with government deregulation of banks.  Perhaps Mrs. Kern, with her ph.d in economics, can further enlighten us as to the complex nature of abortion and credit-default swaps?

She said she thought Mrs. Kern would be re-elected because “her viewpoints are embraced by the electorate.”

Which isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement for her electorate, now is it?

“It is refreshing to have people like Sally Kern, who will walk through the minefield of political correctness to make wise choices for the people of her district and the state of Oklahoma,” Ms. Hefner said.

I find that often, when one is stating that they’re taking a stand against political correctness that they are often about to endorse something, bigoted, racist, or sexiest.  In fact, it’s kind of a keyword that the person in question is kind of a prick who society would be better off without.
